How to fix Windows 7 Interactive logon process initialization has failed error

Recently ran into an issue where a Windows 7 system for no reason gave a “Interactive logon process initialization has failed” error for no reason. No updates had been applied and nothing out of the ordinary. This is a quick post on how I was able to resolve the issue.

Tried several of the usual steps.

  • Reboot the system
  • Tried to select Safe Mode, does not work same error
  • Last Known Good Configuration

None changed the error and could not get past the error. Booted from a Linux live CD (Fedora 22) and started looking around in the filesystem and found the c:\Windows\system32\logonui.exe file was missing. Copied the file from another working Windows 7 instance to a USB flash drive and copied to the systems directory. After rebooting the error was gone.

I do not know about a hotfix for this issue. Hos was able to fix it was to copy c:\Windows\system32\logonui.exe from a working Windows 7 system to the system with the issue.

        It works.
But not necessary to boot linux live
copy logonui to working system to bootables windows pendrive
        Than boot the system
        Next
        Go tho the repair system
        Next
        select browse installed image
than copy logonui to pendrive and paste it to c:\Windows\system32\ and reboot ……..

There are always other options to repair the issue but there are instances that the Linux live is the option to use. In the instance that prompted me to post this was one of them.

Worked for me, although c:\Windows\system32\logonui.exe was present I copied over the file from a working PC rebooted and it worked fine. Booted my PC with BART PE bootable CD and copied file from USB stick.

same thing happened on my pc… it was just last night, while waiting for the antivirus full scan to be finished my pc did suddenly stop. Dont know what exactly happened as I had a nap. I restarted it and the disk checking appears but I wonder why it is being cancelled by itself. Then it stays there.I decided then to use the startup repair. But does add problems instead. This Interactive logon came and wouldnt let me login to check for the event log. Have read ur solution so ill try. But then can I just copy the missing file from the recovery disc as I dont have another windows 7 pc? will it work? or not even possible?

Had the same issue. I restarted the pc in safe mode, checked and the logonui was in the system32 folder. I restarted the system normally and it worked fine. I wonder!

Running 64-bit Windows 7, on an Asus laptop, cannot reach logon screen… the Logon Process Initialization Failure dialog box appears just before the logon screen is supposed to appear. I have attempted restart several times, same result… I have gone to “repair system” and tried to restore to a previous point, again same result…
I cannot get into Windows to view the log files of the event. Is there any other option that I can use before I use a last resort option… restoring the image which will overwrite the current disc before a complete restore can be done?

I have also tried to restart in Safe Mode also, but still comes up with the Logon Process Initialization Failure dialog box

This is amazing. Worked for me perfectly well. I just copied the LogonUI.exe file and pasted it in System32 folder on the local drive and BooM. It worked. Thanks once more.
