How To Resolve PowerPath 6 Installation Hang on Installing Prerequisites Issue

So you are performing an upgrade to latest PowerPath on Windows and during the installation it hangs on Installing Prerequisites. No errors popup and nothing in the log except you see that vcredist is running. Very puzzling and not much to go on.

So why is it happening? With a bit of digging we find an article https://emcservice.force.com/CustomersPartners/kA2j0000000RI7vCAG that hints towards the possible issue. The error described in the article is  “When attempting to load the PowerPath for Windows Administrator the following error occurs”. Looking at the article it is referring to required Microsoft VC++ redistributables were missing. Going further in the PowerPath release notes we see the version of Microsoft VC++ redistributable required.

Talking to EMC support we find that PowerPath requires specific version of VC++ 2005 and 2008 to install.

Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable 9.0.30729.6161
Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable 8.0.61000

Support said just to uninstall the version PowerPath uses. Apparently the PowerPath uninstalls the program and reinstalls everytime you run it.

First try to uninstall the entire x86 and x64 versions of VC++ 2005 Redistributed from Programs and Features. You will also need to uninstall Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable 9.0.30729.6161 as well. If the uninstall hangs, use the Microsoft Utility found here. Using the Microsoft Utility you will have to re-run it each time for each program to uninstall, be warned it takes time to run.

First time I tried to uninstall only the version PowerPath was needing and re-ran the installer, which hung. So, next uninstalled all VC++ 2005 versions and the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable 9.0.30729.6161 x86 and x64 version. Re-ran the installer and had success!

One final note is that you will want to download and reinstall any versions of VC++ 2005 Redistributed that maybe required by other programs on the system as they will not work without it.
